What is Familial Hypercholesterolaemia?
Familial hypercholesterolaemia is a hereditary condition that occurs when there is an increased presence of low-density cholesterol within the body. Being diagnosed with familial hypercholesterolaemia can increase the chance of the sufferer having a heart attack from a very young age.
Applying for Critical Illness cover with Familial hypercholesterolaemia:
As we all know that Critical illness cover is a policy which pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition listed in the insurer’s claims set such as cancer, heart attack, stroke etc. Arranging Critical illness cover with familial hypercholesterolaemia will be assessed similarly to that of life cover. The insurance provider will want to know details surrounding your condition like how well managed your cholesterol is, your latest cholesterol readings and when were they taken.
In case your cholesterol is well managed, some insurers may be able to offer cover at standard terms. Where your cholesterol is not well controlled or there are other secondary illnesses such as high BMI or heart attack history, the insurer may request for a report from your doctor to confirm your overall health. Based upon your medical report your policy may be accepted at standard or non-standard terms i.e., premium increase. It is understandable that premium increase doesn’t sound ideal, but these often aren’t as bad as people think. There’s no harm in asking and if you are not happy with the final price, there are no obligations for you to take out the policy.
Please note there are rare cases where people with familial hypercholesterolaemia have been declined critical illness cover, this is due to their cholesterol levels not well controlled or they have a combination of illnesses. Please do not panic if this is something that you experience. You have the access to specialist insurers who will be able to talk you through options that could be useful to you.
